The Fork-tailed Drongo is an intelligent and interesting bird.

It is aggressive and will mob birds of prey and large cats e.g. Leopards etc. and even humans!

It can mimic the calls of many bird species, small mammals and even the alarm call of Meerkats, so as to scare them away to pirate their food.

It perches near beehives in order to catch bees (its favourite food) entering or leaving the hive.

It favours veldfires to catch grasshoppers, beetles and other insects escaping the flames.  There are reports of Drongos’ moving twigs to spread the flames, thus being called the ‘firebird or ‘smoke bird’. This burning often attracts large numbers of Drongos’.

Sir David Attenborough featured the bird in one of his shows.
