Pitta, African – EBEDES BIRDS

We were fortunate to observe the bird in breeding display where the bird jumps vertically about 5cm above a branch, makes a 'prrrp' sound with its wings and raises its tail on landing to display the red vent.

NOTES:

This bird was sighted on a birding trip arranged by John Robinson of Robinson Birding together with 7 other birders on a 5-day trip to the Coutada 11 concession in central Mozambique south of the Zambezi River in December 2022. A number of other specials including Lesser Seedcracker, Red-throated Twinspot, Southern Banded Snake Eagle, Lowland Tiny Greenbul, Collared Palm Thrush, Green-backed Woodpecker, Chestnut-fronted Helmetshrike, Livingstone’s Flycatcher, Western Violet-backed Sunbird and many others were seen.
